Testing the material to know which allows electric current to pass through it in Electrical Conductivity of Liquids – Class 8 Science Experiment
Chapter Name: Electrical Conductivity of Liquids
Activity Name: Testing the material to know which allows electric current to pass through it in Electrical Conductivity of Liquids
Activity Description:

This experiment aims to test various materials to determine if they allow electric current to pass through them. The setup involves a circuit with a torch bulb or LED, a dry cell, wooden sheet, two drawing pins, and connecting wires.
By replacing the key with different materials, such as a nail, strip of paper, piece of chalk, drinking straw, piece of plastic, paper clip, rubber eraser, and pencil graphite, observations are made on whether the bulb glows or not in each case.
Required Items:
- Torch bulb or LED
- Dry cell
- Wooden sheet
- Two drawing pins
- Key (safety pin)
- Pieces of connecting wires
Step by Step Procedure:
- Set up the electric circuit as shown in Figure-1.
- Place the key on a drawing pin. The bulb will start glowing as soon as the key touches the drawing pin.
- Replace the key with a nail and observe if the bulb glows.
- Repeat the activity using different materials (strip of paper, piece of chalk, drinking straw, piece of plastic, paper clip, rubber eraser, pencil graphite, etc.) instead of the nail.
- Note in each case whether the bulb glows or not and record your observations in Table-1.
Experiment Observations:
Record the observations of whether the bulb glows or not for each material tested and enter them into Table-1.

Precautions:
- Do not keep the bulb in the ‘ON’ position for an extended period to avoid early discharge of the dry cell.
- Follow safety guidelines while conducting the experiment, especially when dealing with electrical components.
Lesson Learnt from Experiment:
Through this experiment, it was observed that some materials allow electric current to pass through them, making them good conductors of electricity.
