Arrangement of cells in Simple electric circuits – Class 6 Science Experiment

Chapter Name: Water in our life

Activity Name: Arrangement of cells in Simple electric circuits

Activity Description:

The experiment involves arranging cells in a torch in various positions to observe when the bulb glows and when it doesn’t. By examining different cell arrangements, we aim to determine the specific position that allows the bulb to light up.

Required Items:

  1. Torch
  2. Two cells (batteries)
  3. Bulb
  4. Connecting wires

Step by Step Procedure:

  1. Gather all the required items for the experiment.
  2. Insert the bulb into the torch’s bulb holder.
  3. Connect one end of a connecting wire to the bottom terminal of the bulb holder.
  4. Take the first cell and connect its positive (+) terminal to the other end of the connecting wire.
  5. Connect the negative (-) terminal of the first cell to the torch’s body, ensuring a secure connection.
  6. Observe whether the bulb glows or not.
  7. Disconnect the first cell from the circuit.
  8. Take the second cell and connect its positive (+) terminal to the connecting wire.
  9. Connect the negative (-) terminal of the second cell to the torch’s body, ensuring a secure connection.
  10. Observe whether the bulb glows or not.
  11. Disconnect the second cell from the circuit.
  12. Now, arrange the cells in different positions, such as: a. Connecting the positive terminal of the first cell to the negative terminal of the second cell. b. Connecting the positive terminal of the second cell to the negative terminal of the first cell. c. Connecting the positive terminal of the first cell to the positive terminal of the second cell. d. Connecting the negative terminal of the first cell to the negative terminal of the second cell.
  13. Observe the bulb’s behavior in each arrangement and record your observations.
  14. Create diagrams or pictures illustrating the different positions of the cells and the glowing or non-glowing state of the bulb.

Experiment Observations:

Record your observations for each cell arrangement, indicating whether the bulb glows or not. Use diagrams to represent the different positions of the cells and the bulb’s behavior.

Precautions:

  1. Ensure proper connections between the cells, bulb, and torch body.
  2. Handle the cells with care, avoiding short circuits or accidental contact with conductive materials.
  3. Use connecting wires with proper insulation to prevent any electrical hazards.
  4. Do not touch the bulb or the connecting wires while the circuit is connected to the cells.
  5. Conduct the experiment under adult supervision.

Lesson Learnt from Experiment:

Through this experiment, we learn that the bulb glows only when the cells are arranged in a specific position. This observation suggests that an electric circuit requires a complete and unbroken path for the current to flow and for the bulb to light up.

It is important to connect the positive terminal of one cell to the negative terminal of another cell in order to establish a continuous flow of electricity in the circuit.
