Observing the diffusion of liquids in Matter Around Us – Class 9 Science Experiment

Chapter Name: Matter Around Us

Activity Name: Observing the diffusion of liquids in Matter Around Us

Activity Description:

Observing the diffusion of liquids in Matter Around Us - Class 9 Science Experiment

In this experiment, we will observe the diffusion of liquids using water and colored ink or KMnO4 solution. The objective is to demonstrate that liquids can also diffuse into each other, similar to gases.

Required Items:

  1. Two 250 ml beakers
  2. Water
  3. Blue or red ink OR KMnO4 solution
  4. Dropper

Step by Step Procedure:

  1. Take two 250 ml beakers and fill them with water.
  2. Choose either blue or red ink or KMnO4 solution.
  3. Using a dropper, slowly add a drop of the chosen liquid along the sides of the first beaker.
  4. Observe the beaker for the spread of color in the water.

Experiment Observations:

  • The colored liquid (ink or KMnO4) starts to spread into the water from the point of the drop.
  • Over time, the color gradually spreads and mixes with the water.

Precautions:

  1. Be careful while handling the liquid and the beakers to avoid spills and accidents.
  2. Perform the experiment on a stable surface to prevent unnecessary movement.

Lesson Learnt from Experiment:

Through this experiment, we learn that liquids also have the property of diffusion, just like gases. Diffusion is the process by which particles move from areas of higher concentration to areas of lower concentration until they are evenly distributed. In this activity, we observe the gradual mixing of the colored liquid with water, showcasing the phenomenon of diffusion.
