Convex lens in Refraction Of Light At Curved Surfaces – Class 10 Science Experiment

Chapter Name: Refraction Of Light At Curved Surfaces

Activity Name: Convex lens in Refraction Of Light At Curved Surfaces

Activity Description:

In this experiment, we will investigate the refraction of light through a convex lens. We will use a v-stand to hold the convex lens and a candle as the object. By adjusting the position of a screen on the other side of the lens, we will observe the formation of an image of the candle flame. We will measure the image distance and object distance for different positions of the candle and record the data in table 1.

Required Items:

  1. Convex lens
  2. V-stand
  3. Candle
  4. Screen (sheet of white paper)
  5. Table (approximately 2 meters long)

Step by Step Procedure:

  1. Place the v-stand on the middle of the long table.
  2. Put the convex lens on the v-stand.
  3. Light a candle and ask your friend to hold it far away from the lens along the principal axis.
  4. Adjust the screen on the other side of the lens until you obtain a clear image of the candle flame on the screen.
  5. Measure the distance between the v-stand of the lens and the image on the screen (image distance) and also measure the distance between the candle and the v-stand (object distance).
  6. Record the values in table 1.
  7. Now, move the candle to a distance of 60 cm from the lens, placing the flame on the principal axis of the lens.
  8. Adjust the screen until you get a sharp image of the candle flame on it.
  9. Measure the image distance (v) from the lens and record the corresponding values of ‘u’ (object distance) and ‘v’ (image distance) in table 1.
  10. Repeat the above step for various object distances like 50 cm, 40 cm, 30 cm, etc., and record the image distances in table 1.

Experiment Observations:

Note down your observations in table format:

Precautions:

  1. Handle the convex lens with care to avoid scratches and damage.
  2. Ensure the candle flame is stable and not flickering during the experiment.
  3. Use a white screen to observe the image clearly.
  4. Keep the lens and screen clean for better image formation.

Lesson Learnt from Experiment:

Through this experiment, we will understand how a convex lens refracts light rays and forms images. We will learn the relationship between object distance and image distance for a convex lens and study the properties of the image formed.
