In this experiment, we will learn how to measure the length of a curved path using a cotton thread and a meter scale. The goal is to find the length of the curved path accurately.

Required Items:

  1. Alpins (at least 2)
  2. Cotton thread
  3. Meter scale
  4. Scissors

Step by Step Procedure:

  1. Fix alpins at the ends of the curved line you want to measure, as shown in the figure.
  2. Take the cotton thread and tie a knot at the first point, A, of the alpin A.
  3. Move the cotton thread along the curved path, passing through points B, C, D, E, and so on.
  4. Make sure the thread is neither too tight nor too loose. It should coincide with the curve at each point as you move along the path.
  5. When the thread reaches the extreme end of the curved path, cut it at that point using the scissors.
  6. Remove the thread from point A and place it straight along the length of a meter scale.
  7. Measure the length of the thread using the meter scale. The length of the thread represents the length of the curved path.

Experiment Observations:

  • Note down the measurements obtained from the meter scale.

Precautions:

  1. Take care while moving the cotton thread along the curved path to ensure it coincides with the curve at each point.
  2. Ensure the thread is neither too tight nor too loose, as it may affect the accuracy of the measurement.
  3. Be cautious while cutting the thread to avoid any accidents with the scissors.
  4. Use a sturdy meter scale for accurate measurements.
