Effect of rollers on friction in Friction – Class 8 Science Experiment
Chapter Name: Friction
Activity Name: Effect of rollers on friction in Friction
Activity Description:

This experiment explores the effect of rollers on friction. The activity involves comparing the effort required to pull a suitcase with and without rollers. Additionally, it investigates the ease of pushing a book on a flat surface compared to pushing the same book placed on pencils or pens without caps.
Required Items:
- Suitcase without rollers
- Suitcase with rollers
- Book
- Pencils or pens without caps
- Table or flat surface
Step by Step Procedure:
- Place the suitcase without rollers on a flat surface.
- Pull the suitcase along the surface and note the effort required. Record your observations.
- Replace the suitcase without rollers with the one that has rollers.
- Pull the suitcase with rollers along the same surface and observe the effort required. Record your observations.
- Place the book on the table.
- Try to push the book along the surface and note the effort required. Record your observations.
- Place two to three pencils or pens without caps under the book, creating a makeshift roller system.
- Push the book along the pencils or pens and observe the effort required. Record your observations.
Experiment Observations:
- Pulling the suitcase without rollers: [Observations]
- Pulling the suitcase with rollers: [Observations]
- Pushing the book on the table: [Observations]
- Pushing the book on pencils/pens: [Observations]
Precautions:
- Ensure that the surface used for the experiment is smooth and free from any obstacles or debris.
- Handle the suitcases, book, and pencils/pens carefully to avoid any damage or accidents.
Lesson Learnt from Experiment:
- The suitcase with rollers requires less effort to pull compared to the one without rollers. This is because rollers reduce friction between the suitcase and the surface, making it easier to move.
- When the book is placed on pencils or pens without caps, it becomes easier to push. This is because the rolling motion of the pencils/pens reduces the static friction between the book and the surface, making it easier to move.
