Hen and Sparrow movement in Movements in Animals – Class 6 Science Experiment

Chapter Name: Movements in Animals

Activity Name: Hen and Sparrow movement in Movements in Animals

Activity Description:

Observing the movements of a hen and a sparrow and noting down their similarities and differences.

Required Items:

  1. Notebook
  2. Pen or pencil

Step by Step Procedure:

  1. Find a suitable location where you can observe hens and sparrows.
  2. Take your notebook and pen/pencil.
  3. Observe the movements of a hen carefully. Pay attention to its walking, running, and flying patterns. Note down your observations in your notebook.
  4. Next, observe the movements of a sparrow. Observe how it hops, flies, and perches. Note down your observations in your notebook.
  5. Compare the movements of the hen and the sparrow. Look for similarities and dissimilarities in their movements.
  6. Write down your findings in your notebook, highlighting the similarities and differences you observed.

Experiment Observations:

  • Walking: Both the hen and the sparrow walk on their legs, but the hen’s gait is slower and more deliberate, while the sparrow’s walking is quick and agile.
  • Running: Hens can run on the ground with a forward motion using their legs, whereas sparrows do not typically run on the ground.
  • Flying: Both hens and sparrows have the ability to fly, but sparrows are more adept at flying and can maneuver in the air with greater agility.
  • Hopping: Sparrows hop from one place to another, especially when they are on the ground or perched on a low surface. Hens do not hop.
  • Perching: Sparrows can perch on branches and other surfaces using their feet, while hens are not as skilled at perching and usually prefer to stay on the ground.

Precautions:

  1. Ensure that you maintain a safe distance from the animals and do not disturb or harm them during the observation.
  2. Observe the animals in their natural habitat or a controlled environment to ensure their safety and well-being.
  3. Do not attempt to handle or touch the animals without proper guidance or supervision.

Lesson Learnt from Experiment:

From this experiment, we can learn that different animals have different modes of movement suited to their physical characteristics and habitats.

The observation of the hen and sparrow highlights the adaptations they have developed for walking, running, flying, hopping, and perching. Understanding these movements helps us appreciate the diversity and versatility of animal locomotion.
