In this experiment, you will create a periscope using an empty agarbatti box and mirror strips. The periscope allows you to observe objects while remaining hidden behind obstacles. By understanding the principles of reflection of light, you can see things in front of the periscope through the mirrors’ reflections.

Required Items:

  1. Empty agarbatti box
  2. Two mirror strips
  3. Scale
  4. Pencil
  5. Blade
  6. Matchbox
  7. Candle
  8. Glue

Step by Step Procedure:

  1. Close both ends of the agarbatti box.
  2. Draw squares at both ends and draw diagonals in each square.
  3. Using a blade, slit along the drawn diagonals to create openings for the mirror strips.
  4. Ensure the slits are equal in length to the mirror strips.
  5. Place the mirror strips in the slits, ensuring they are parallel to each other and facing each other’s reflecting surfaces.
  6. Fix the mirror strips firmly using molten wax from a burning candle or glue.
  7. Cut out two windows on the narrow sides of the box, aligning them with the reflecting surfaces of the mirror strips.
  8. Your periscope is now ready for use.

Experiment Observations:

  • When you look through window 2, you will be able to see objects positioned in front of window 1. By hiding behind an obstacle, such as a tree, you can observe events or objects on the other side using the periscope.

Precautions:

  1. Handle the blade with care to avoid accidents.
  2. Ensure the mirror strips are aligned parallel and securely fixed to get a clear reflection.
  3. Be cautious while using the candle to prevent burns.

Lesson Learnt from Experiment:

Through this periscope experiment, you learn about the reflection of light and how it enables you to see objects even when hidden from direct view. The periscope demonstrates the principles of reflection and how it finds practical applications in various optical devices.
