Rise of temperature in various conditions in Heat – Class 10 Science Experiment
Chapter Name: Heat
Activity Name: Rise of temperature in various conditions in Heat
Activity Description:
This experiment aims to investigate how the temperature changes when different quantities of water at various initial temperatures are mixed together. Three situations are explored, involving mixing water at the same temperature, mixing water at different temperatures, and mixing different quantities of water at different temperatures.
Required Items:
- Two beakers of the same size
- Larger beaker
- Thermometer
- 200 ml of water
- 100 ml of water
Step by Step Procedure:
Situation – 1:
- Take two beakers and pour 200 ml of water into each of them.
- Heat the water in both beakers until they attain the same temperature.
- Pour the water from both beakers into a larger beaker.
- Measure the temperature of the mixture.
Situation – 2:
- Heat the water in one beaker to 90°C and the other to 60°C.
- Mix the water from both beakers in a larger beaker.
- Measure the temperature of the mixture and observe any changes.
Situation – 3:
- Take 100 ml of water at 90°C and 200 ml of water at 60°C.
- Mix the two quantities of water together.
- Measure the temperature of the mixture and note any differences.
Experiment Observations:
Situation – 1:
- The temperature of the mixture is the same as the temperature of the heated water in both beakers.
Situation – 2:
- The temperature of the mixture will be between 60°C and 90°C.
- The final temperature will be closer to the temperature of the larger quantity of water (i.e., 90°C water) than the smaller quantity.
Situation – 3:
- The temperature of the mixture will be between 60°C and 90°C.
- The change in temperature will not be as significant as in Situation – 2 because the difference in initial temperatures is smaller.
Precautions:
- Handle hot water with care to avoid burns or injuries.
- Use a reliable and calibrated thermometer for accurate temperature measurements.
- Ensure the beakers are clean and free from contaminants.
Lesson Learnt from Experiment:
The experiment demonstrates that when different quantities of water at different temperatures are mixed together, the final temperature of the mixture depends on both the initial temperatures and the quantities of water involved. The larger the quantity of water at a higher temperature, the more influence it has on the final mixture temperature.
