Vibrating body produces sound in Sound – Class 8 Science Experiment
Chapter Name: Sound
Activity Name: Vibrating body produces sound in Sound
Activity Description:

In this experiment, we will investigate how a vibrating body, in this case, a brass bell, produces sound. We will compare the sound produced when the bell is rung freely and when it is held tightly by hand.
Required Items:
Brass bell (typically used in Pooja rooms or schools)
Step by Step Procedure:
- Take the brass bell and ring it freely. Observe and listen carefully to the sound it produces.
- Now, hold the bell tightly with your hand as shown in Fig-1 (a firm grip around the bell).
- Ring the bell again while holding it tightly.
- Pay close attention to any differences in the sound between the two situations.
Experiment Observations:
- Note the sound produced by the bell when rung freely.
- Note the sound produced by the bell when held tightly and then rung.
Precautions:
- Handle the brass bell with care to avoid any damage or injury.
- Perform the experiment in a quiet room to better observe the sound.
Lesson Learnt from Experiment:
Through this experiment, we learn that a vibrating body, like the brass bell, produces sound. When the bell is rung freely, it vibrates more freely, and the sound produced is clearer and more resonant. On the other hand, when the bell is held tightly while ringing, it doesn’t vibrate as freely, resulting in a slightly muted or dampened sound.
