Let us see microscopic organisms in Living with Non-Living – Class 6 Science Experiment

Chapter Name: Living with Non-Living

Activity Name: Let us see microscopic organisms in Living with Non-Living

Activity Description:

This experiment involves observing microscopic organisms, specifically bacteria, found in curd. By using a microscope, we can examine their shapes and understand their role in the process of converting milk into curd.

Required Items:

  1. Curd (watery substance)
  2. Glass slides
  3. Microscope
  4. Cover slips
  5. Dropper or pipette

Step by Step Procedure:

  1. Take a small amount of curd (watery substance) in a container.
  2. Place a glass slide on a flat surface.
  3. Using a dropper or pipette, carefully put a drop of the curd substance onto the center of the glass slide.
  4. Take another clean glass slide and gently place it on top of the drop, covering it completely.
  5. Make sure the two slides are aligned, and there are no air bubbles trapped between them.
  6. Hold the two slides together and carefully place them under the microscope.
  7. Adjust the focus of the microscope to get a clear view of the slide.
  8. Observe the slide under low magnification and then gradually increase the magnification to get a closer look at the bacteria.
  9. Take note of your observations, paying attention to the shapes and structures of the bacteria you see.
  10. If possible, use a pencil or pen to draw a picture of what you observe under the microscope, labeling any notable features.

Experiment Observations:

  • Observe the presence of small, single-celled organisms.
  • Notice the various shapes of bacteria, which can include spherical (cocci), rod-shaped (bacilli), or spiral (spirilla) forms.
  • Pay attention to any distinguishing features or patterns you observe.

Precautions:

  1. Handle the glass slides and cover slips carefully to avoid breakage or injury.
  2. Make sure the microscope is properly set up and focused before placing the slides.
  3. Use caution when using a dropper or pipette to avoid spilling the curd or injuring yourself.
  4. Clean the glass slides thoroughly before and after the experiment to prevent contamination.

Lesson Learnt from Experiment:

Through this experiment, we learn that microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, are present in our surroundings and play important roles in various processes. In this case, the bacteria found in curd help in the fermentation process, converting milk into curd.

Observing these microorganisms under a microscope gives us a better understanding of their structures and functions. Additionally, it highlights the significance of microorganisms in everyday life and their impact on our environment.
