Understanding the increase and decrease in energy of an object in Work And Energy – Class 9 Science Experiment
Chapter Name: Work And Energy
Activity Name: Understanding the increase and decrease in energy of an object in Work And Energy
Activity Description:

In this experiment, we will investigate the changes in the energy of a hard spring when it is compressed and then released. By compressing the spring and releasing it, we will observe its position, state, and size to understand how energy is affected during the process.
Required Items:
- Hard spring
- Table
Step by Step Procedure:
- Place the hard spring on a table.
- Compress the spring using your palm.
- Hold the compressed spring for a few seconds.
- Release the spring and observe what happens next.
- Take note of any changes in the spring’s position, state, and size during the compression and release.
Experiment Observations:
- When the spring is compressed, it undergoes a change in its size, getting shorter and storing potential energy.
- Upon release, the spring gains energy and may even jump away from the table due to the stored potential energy being converted into kinetic energy.
Precautions:
- Handle the hard spring with care to avoid any injuries.
- Keep your face and body away from the spring during compression and release to prevent accidents.
- Perform the experiment on a stable table to ensure safety and accurate observations.
Lesson Learnt from Experiment:
Through this experiment, we learn about the relationship between work and energy. When work is done on an object, it gains energy, as seen when compressing the spring. On the other hand, when work is done by an object, it loses energy, as observed when the spring is released and jumps away from the table.
