Required Items:

  1. Rubber bands of the same size and thickness

Step by Step Procedure:

  1. Take one rubber band and stretch it using your fingers. Note how it exerts a force on your fingers.
  2. Now, take a second rubber band of the same size and stretch it around your fingers along with the first rubber band. Observe and compare the force exerted by the combination of two bands with that of one.
  3. Continue increasing the number of rubber bands around your fingers, stretching them to the same length, and each time observing the force exerted on your fingers.

Experiment Observations:

  • When one rubber band is stretched, it exerts a certain force on your fingers.
  • When two rubber bands are stretched together to the same length, the force exerted is greater than that of one rubber band.
  • As you increase the number of rubber bands, the force exerted on your fingers increases accordingly.

Precautions:

  1. Be careful while stretching the rubber bands to avoid snapping them onto your fingers.
  2. Use rubber bands of similar size and thickness for accurate comparisons.

Lesson Learnt from Experiment:

  1. When multiple rubber bands are stretched together, the net force they exert is the sum of the individual forces. For two rubber bands with force F each, the net force is 2F units, and for three rubber bands, it would be 3F units, and so on.
  2. This experiment helps us understand how combining forces can lead to an increase in overall force, which is a fundamental concept in physics.
