Electrical supply in Electric Current – Class 10 Science Experiment
Chapter Name: Electric Current
Activity Name: Electrical supply in Electric Current
Activity Description:
This experiment aims to explore the behavior of a simple electric circuit by using different components such as a bulb, battery, switch, and wires. The main objective is to observe how these components affect the flow of electric current and the glow of the bulb in different circuit setups.
Required Items:
- Bulb
- Battery
- Switch
- Insulated copper wires
- Nylon wires
Step by Step Procedure:
- Situation 1: Connect the ends of the insulated copper wires to the terminals of the battery through the bulb and switch.
- Switch on the circuit and observe the bulb.
- Situation 2: Remove the battery from the circuit and connect the remaining components (bulb and switch) to make a complete circuit without the battery.
- Switch on the circuit and observe the bulb. Does the bulb glow?
- Situation 3: Replace the copper wires with nylon wires and connect them to the terminals of the battery through the bulb and switch.
- Switch on the circuit and observe the bulb. Does the bulb glow?
Experiment Observations:
- In situation 1 (using insulated copper wires), the bulb glows when the circuit is switched on.
- In situation 2 (circuit without a battery), the bulb does not glow.
- In situation 3 (using nylon wires), the bulb does not glow.
Precautions:
- Ensure that the connections are secure and the components are properly attached.
- Handle the batteries with care and avoid short-circuiting them.
- Use appropriate wire lengths to prevent unnecessary resistance in the circuit.
Lesson Learnt from Experiment:
The experiment demonstrates the significance of using conductive materials like copper wires to facilitate the flow of electric current in a circuit.
The bulb glows only when a complete circuit is formed, allowing the current to flow from the positive terminal of the battery, through the bulb, and back to the negative terminal. In situation 2, the absence of the battery disrupts the circuit, while in situation 3, the use of non-conductive nylon wires inhibits the flow of electric current.
