How do we measure? in Learning how to measure – Class 6 Science Experiment
Chapter Name: Learning how to measure
Activity Name: How do we measure? in Learning how to measure
Activity Description:

In this activity, you will learn how to measure the height of your classmate using a meter scale. The objective is to measure the distance from the floor to the mark on the wall above your classmate’s head.
By comparing the measurements taken by different students, you will also explore the sources of error in measurements.
Required Items:
- Meter scale
- Notebook
Step by Step Procedure:
- Ask your classmate to stand with their back against a wall.
- Make a mark on the wall exactly above your classmate’s head. Ensure it is a clear and visible mark.
- Take the meter scale and align it vertically along the wall, starting from the floor and passing through the mark you made.
- Read and record the measurement on the meter scale where it intersects with the mark on the wall. This will give you the height of your classmate.
- Repeat the measurement for each student in the class, ensuring that they stand in the same position against the wall.
- Record all the measurements in your notebook.
Experiment Observations:
Compare the measurements reported by different students. Note down the readings and observe if they are the same or different. Pay attention to any variations in the measurements.
Precautions:
- Ensure that the mark on the wall is made exactly above the head of your classmate. Any deviation can lead to incorrect measurements.
- Use the meter scale properly, aligning it vertically and reading the measurement accurately where it intersects with the mark on the wall.
- Encourage students to take measurements carefully and avoid any unnecessary movements or disturbances during the process.
Lesson Learnt from Experiment:
Through this experiment, you will realize that even when using a standard meter scale, the measurements taken by different students may not be exactly equal. The variations in readings can occur due to errors in measurement, such as not marking the point accurately at the top of the head or not using the meter scale correctly.
This activity highlights the importance of precision and accuracy in measurement, and the potential sources of error that need to be considered when obtaining measurements.
