Activity Description:

Observing the motion of a pen cap kept on thick paper ring in Laws Of Motion - Class 9 Science Experiment

In this experiment, we will observe the motion of a pen cap placed on a circular strip made from thick paper. The paper ring will be balanced on the center of a bottle’s mouth, and a pen cap will be placed on the paper ring, aligned with the center of the bottle’s mouth.

By pulling the paper hoop quickly with your finger, we can initiate motion and observe what happens to the pen cap.

Required Items:

  1. Thick paper
  2. Bottle with a wide mouth
  3. Pen cap

Step by Step Procedure:

  1. Cut a circular strip from the thick paper to create a paper hoop.
  2. Place the paper hoop on the center of the bottle’s mouth, ensuring it is balanced and stable.
  3. Align the pen cap at the center of the bottle’s mouth on top of the paper hoop.
  4. With your finger, pull the paper hoop quickly and with force.

Experiment Observations:

  1. Upon pulling the paper hoop, the pen cap will likely be set into motion.
  2. The pen cap may slide or roll along the surface of the paper hoop and eventually fall off.

Precautions:

  • Ensure that the paper hoop is stable and balanced on the bottle’s mouth to avoid any accidents.
  • Use a bottle with a wide mouth to provide better stability for the paper hoop.
  • Perform the experiment in a controlled environment to minimize external factors that could influence the results.

Lesson Learnt from Experiment:

This experiment demonstrates the application of Newton’s laws of motion. When the paper hoop is pulled quickly, the pen cap remains at rest initially due to inertia (Newton’s first law). However, when an external force (pulling the paper hoop) is applied, the pen cap experiences acceleration (Newton’s second law) and eventually falls off the paper hoop due to gravity.
